Special Collections: Special Collections for Jewish Studies

This collection consists of newspapers from the Jewish communities of South Jersey and Philadelphia between 1919 and 1920.

On microfilm, this collection showcases the Jewish community of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1912 through newspapers.

Ranging from 1998 to 2014, this collection contains full volumes of the newspaper.

Israel Hirsch and Esther Levin were some of the first settlers in Alliance, New Jersey after fleeing the persecution of Jews by the Russian government. They immigrated with their three children (Hannah, William, and Samuel) and went on to five more children once they settled in New Jersey (Samuel, John, Mendel, Jenny, and Fannie). To keep the large family connected, a club was formed. Every member is a descendant of the eight children. This collection features club details, such as meeting transcripts and rules, from the 1950s to the 1980s.

The Ladies Auxiliary of Toms River was a Jewish community group that met in the 1950s and early 1960s. Unfortunately, there are not many details about this organization beyond attendance lists, photos, names of presidents of the club, and a few transcripts of the meetings. It is known that the group came together during this period to spread news and create community events.

Bluma Bayuk was raised on a farm in Alliance, the first successful and long-term Jewish farming colony in the United States. This collection contains her own belongings and work, along with content from her father and grandfather that give insight into their lives. Her novel "A Farmer’s Daughter: Bluma" is also featured under the Jewish Farmers in South Jersey section.

Consisting of 31 scrapbooks, this collection showcases the rich history of the Jewish Communities of South Jersey, particularly in Atlantic County. Consisting of newspaper clippings, letters, invitations, ads, propaganda, etc. - it gives a comprehensive concept of Jewish South Jersey culture from the 1940s to the 1980s.

Materials from roughly 1949 to 1997 that showcase the history of the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey.

The Alliance Colony was first established in 1882 by Jewish families fleeing oppression in Russia. It is considered the first successful Jewish farming colony in the United States. This collection consists of land records, historical photographs and information (journals, synagogue records, etc.), and family information from the original settlers and their descendants.

This collection contains the founding documents, financial records, letters, information of events, and newspaper articles in regard to the Alliance Colony and its descendants.
