Factors to consider when choosing a journal:

Journal indexing - is the journal indexed in our major citation databases? Check the links below for the Journal's title.

You can generally validate whether or not a journal is academic and scholarly and if it is peer-reviewed from the resources below. These databases will also give an indication of where the journal is indexed if it is not in a database we have access to.

Google Scholar Advanced Search
Adding the journal's name in the "Return articles published in" box to search specifically for a single journal.

Provides detailed information on more than 300,000 periodicals (also called serials) of all types: academic and scholarly journals, eJournals, peer-reviewed titles, popular magazines, newspapers, newsletters and more.

Stockton's Journal List
Use this link to see if your journal is available in Full Text through our database subscriptions. If a journal is not in our Journal List, it just means we do not subscribe to it. Major journals will be indexed in our databases. If the journal you are considering is excluded from indexing in these databases it may be an indicator of poor quality. Indexing will allow a level of "find-ability" and often allow for citation tracking of articles once published.
Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
If your journal is listed in DOAJ it does not automatically imply legitimacy but if they are not then it is worrisome.

Journal Cover Sheet
Cover sheet explaining what's important about your scholarship. Good to use for Promotion and Tenure packets to highlight peer-reviewed content and impact factors.

Australian Business Deans Council - Master Journal List
The ABDC Journal Quality List divides nearly 3,000 journals into quality categories from A* through C.

Cabell’s Journalytics Academic This link opens in a new window
a journal directory designed to “help researchers evaluate and select the most appropriate outlets for their work”.

Other Journal Quality and Rankings Lists - many legitimate journals will not have impact factors or rankings. Some journals will be included in these lists and will have an impact factor that measures the frequency with which the "average article" in the journal has been cited in a particular year or period. If your journal is not listed complete the validation process discussed in the right column of this page.

Offers a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world's leading journals, with quantifiable, statistical information based on citation data. MANY journals are not listed here so do not panic if yours is not included just make sure to validate your journal through other means.

A collation of journal rankings for academic journals in the areas of Economics, Finance, Accounting, Management, and Marketing. Click on the downloadable lists in PDF format.
SJR SCImago Journal Ranking
Journal title rankings using information from Scopus and Google PageRank. Narrow by subject area or category for your list of journals. Not all legitimate journals are included in these lists.
Eigenfactor Journal Ranking
The 'Eigenfactor Score' is a measure of the overall 'value' of articles published in a given journal in a year. Also provides an 'Article Influence Score' which is based on average citations per article. Not all legitimate journals are included.
